A 4,000 sq ft basement. Uneven concrete. And radiant heat pipes hiding just under the slab — so grinding down the high spots wasn’t an option.
Every bag of self-leveling compound is money. So the whole job became one question: how do I get this floor laser-flat with as FEW bags as possible?
Watch the full 15-minute job here:
The method: tripods + laser
I set my tripods to the laser height, poured the compound, and pulled a straight edge across the tops of the tripods. No guessing, no measuring each spot. The tripods ARE the height reference.
The key rule most people get wrong: start from the highest point of the floor. Everything else builds up from there. That’s how you stop wasting bags filling areas that didn’t need it.
The trick nobody shows you
When the compound is too deep in a low spot, a spiked roller just pulls the material back OUT. So instead of rolling, I smash waves into the deep spot with the smoother — it spreads the compound where it needs to go instead of dragging it away.
The result
4,000 sq ft. 56 bags. Straight edge on the dry floor — no gaps, no light underneath.
